Matt Stover Foundation Helps
Disadvantaged Youth Find PATHWAYS
October 3, 2006- Towson, Maryland
The Matt Stover Foundation donated $5,000 to PATHWAYS this month to kick-start the new program's inaugural season of volunteer tutoring. The program offers tutoring one evening per week for 10-20 students each week at the Towson United Methodist Church, a safe and secure learning environment. PATHWAYS began operation in the fall of 2006, a few weeks following the start of the school year.
Aided by the Matt Stover Foundation donation, PATHWAYS first tutoring sessions took place on Tuesday, October 3rd. A chartered van picked up 14 students from Barclay Middle School and arrived at TUMC for individualized one-on-one tutoring sessions. After that one-hour session the PATHWAYS van dropped the middle school children back off and picked up a second group of students from Forrest Park High School.
PATHWAYS has over 30 qualified adult tutors signed up to to serve. The tutors consist of a blend of certified teachers, experienced tutors, and capable college students. Many of our teachers are experience with at-risk students and students with learning disabilities. The donation from the Matt Stover Foundation makes it possible for PATHWAYS to offer tutoring from the middle school level through honors and advanced placement high school levels in subjects such as algebra, trigonometry, geometry, calculus, English, history, physics, chemistry, biology, computer science, foreign language, and standardized test preparation.
